This school was established on March 06, 1882 by Delegate Alfred W. Harris, a Black attorney, sponsored the bill to establish the school. The school was originally named the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute. It became a university in 1979. The official colors are orange and blue. Their mascot is a Trojan.
Housing options include five freshman housing options and five upperclassman housing options.
The university offers a wide range of student activities and organizations such as Active Minds, American Society of
Mechanical Engineers, and Circle K International.
