This school was established ioncSeptember 19, 1865 by the American Missionary Association with assisstance from the Freedman's Bureau. It became a university on July 01, 1988. The official colors are royal black, grey and red. Their mascot is a panther.
Housing options include buildings that have an apartment-style, air-conditioned residence hall that houses transfer, upperclassmen and CAU scholarship students. Each apartment ranges from four, five or six private bedrooms and a shared common area, bathroom and full kitchen.
Some student organizations available are the Clark Competitive Computing Club, Clark Entrepreneurship Club, Mock Trial and Model United Nations. Clark Atlanta University also offer organizations such as Pre-Health Society/Alpha Epsilon Delta and Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology.

The University was named for Bishop Davis W. Clark, who was the first President of the Freedmen's Aid Society, and became Bishop in 1864. A sparsely furnished room in Clark Chapel, a Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlanta's Summer Hill section, housed the first Clark College Class.
Clark Atlanta University was the nation's first institution to award graduate degrees to African-Americans.
