This school was established on September 18, 1935 by black residents of the Tidewater region (John C. Brooks, Rev. Adolphus Hobbs, William T. Mason, and Elsie Frazier. It became a university in 1979. The official colors are green, gold and gray. Their mascot is Spiro the Spartan.
